. . . Schütz’s reply to Schelling’s attack you will likewise have heard of. [1] Unfortunately it is clear that Schelling will not have the majority on his side; it is a bad thing, when attacking anything, to expose one’s own self in such a variety of ways.
He has now left for Bamberg, and as I understand it, Madame Schlegel, who intends to visit a mineral-springs spa in Franconia, has followed after him. [2] . . .

Schiller’s reference here is to the first part of Schütz’s coarse rejoinder to Schelling’s special printing Ueber die Jenaische Allgemeine Literaturzeitung. Erläuterungen, vom Professor Schelling zu Jena. (Aus dem ersten Heft der Zeitschrift für spekulative Physik besonders abgedruckt) (Jena, Leipzig 1800).
Schütz’s response was published as “Vertheidigung gegen Herrn Professor Schellings sehr unlautere Erläuterungen über die Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung,” Intelligenzblatt of the Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung 57 (Wednesday, 30 April 1800) 465–80; the second part was published in issue 62 (Saturday, 10 May 1800) 513–20 (repr. Fambach 4:371–84, 385–91).
In this response, Schütz also revived the earlier dispute with Wilhelm Schlegel. Back.
