Letter 258h

258h. Ludwig Ferdinand Huber to Wilhelm Schlegel in Jena: Stuttgart, 16 January 1799 [*]

[Stuttgart] 16 January 1799

My last letter was hardly off when I realized I had made a stupid mistake by interpreting your brother’s statements concerning the wretched pasquinader as referring to the “falsified one,” namely, Reinhard in Göttingen, instead of to “Falsarius,” namely, Jenisch in Berlin. [1] It seems in order to relate to you in a postscript that I realized my mistake.

This letter corrects Huber’s incorrect assumption in his letter to Wilhelm on 9/11 January 1800 (letter 258d) concerning the author — Daniel Jenisch — of Diogenes Laterne (Leipzig 1799); an insulting advertisement for the book had appeared in the Allgemeine Zeitung, which Huber was editing at the time. Friedrich Schlegel had publicly demanded an apology. See letter 258d, note 7 concerning this episode and Huber’s public response. Back.

[1] Reinhard had earlier been the victim of a “falsified” letter at the hands of Jenisch, in connection with which Friedrich, in his public demand for an apology, had called the latter a falsarius (Latin: “forger”); see Friedrich’s letter to Schleiermacher around 15 November 1799 (letter 255c) with note 13; for the text of Friedrich’s public demand for an apology in the Intelligenzblatt of the Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung (1800) 3 (Saturday, 4 January 1800) 23–24, see supplementary appendix 252g.1.
