Lavater, Jesus Messias, oder die Zukunft des Herrn: Nach der Offenbarung Johannes (Zürich 1780)
Caroline writes to Julie von Studnitz on 14 March 1783 about Lavater’s poetic paraphrase of the Revelation of John in the New Testament:
“When I hear people talk about him, and when I read his writings, which breathe the true meaning of Christianity throughout, I see in him one of Christ’s principal disciples. He is at the same time the most spirited, cheerful of men, and is the soul of every society of which he is a part.”
Selected illustrations to this volume may provide at least a visual background to Caroline’s enraptured reaction to this particular Christian sensibility.
Illustration pagination in order: 8, 13, 20, 39, 41, 43, 46, 54, 66, 69, 75, 85, 115, 140, 154, 178, 187, 203, 213, 221.
