Illustrations from J. G. Ebel’s travelogue and studies of Swiss mountain inhabitants.
Caroline and Schelling originally anticipated traveling to Rome by way of Switzerland, and Caroline had already earlier (letter 293) recounted having finally acquired one of the travelogues she was seeking. Although she does not remark that she was seeking Ebel’s volumes specifically when she mentions them, such travelogues colored readers’ perceptions by providing illustrations and information for persons anticipating journeying to and through Switzerland. The following illustrations are typical for such period publications.
