Letter 163b

163b. Friedrich Schlegel to Wilhelm Schlegel in Jena: Pillnitz, 15 June 1796 [*]

Pillnitz, 15 June 1796

Be not surprised that you received no response from me to your previous letter. We feared our congratulations would no longer reach you in Jena and so immediately wrote to Karoline in Braunschweig. [1] . . .

Stay well, and write and tell me not only when you yourself will be leaving [Jena], but also when the two of you will be returning together [to Jena]. [2] . . .

[1] “We” refers to Friedrich himself along with his sister and brother-in-law, Charlotte and Ludwig Emanuel Ernst.

Wilhelm and Caroline were to be married two weeks later, on 1 July 1796, in Braunschweig; Wilhelm, however, was still in Jena as part of his journey south and would not be leaving until 28 June (see his letter to Schiller from Jena on that date [letter 163i]; Rudolf Koch and Fritz Kredel, Deutschland und angrenzende Gebiete [Leipzig 1937]):
